Boil Water Advisory: Steps To Take Now and What To Do Next – Memphis Ice

A Boil Water Advisory impacts your ice machines. Learn what you should do right now, what you can do once the advisory is lifted, and how we can help.

A Boil Water Advisory means that any product using water since the advisory was issued could be contaminated. That impacts your ice machines because ice machines use water.

Keep reading to learn what you should do right now, what you can do once the advisory is lifted, and how we can help.

What To Do Right Now

There are two things you should do as soon as a Boil Water Advisory is issued.

  1. Unplug your ice machine. Unplugging your ice machine prevents it from taking in new water.

  2. Empty your ice bin. Any water taken in since the Boil Water Advisory could be contaminated. Your safest option is to stop using the ice currently in the ice bin and empty the bin.

What To Do When the Advisory Is Lifted

Once a Boil Water Advisory is lifted, there are three things that must happen. If you don’t feel comfortable completing these next steps, call Memphis Ice Machine Company for help at 901-360-9197.

  1. Purge the ice machine of all its water.

  2. Change the water filter cartridge that is used in the ice machine before plugging it back in and allowing it to take in water.

  3. Thoroughly wash and sanitize the ice machine and its ice bin. Don’t forget to also clean the ice scoops, ice buckets, and any equipment you use to transport ice.

  4. Plug the ice machine in and make two or three batches of ice. Discard the ice you make as this step is intended to flush the ice machine as an added safety precaution.
