What's Cool About Ice? We Asked the Experts.

Find out what makes ice the coolest thing since, well, the beginning of time.

Have you ever stopped to wonder just how cool ice really is? We’ve gone straight to the experts—Harlow, age 6; Matt, age 11; and Harry, age 12; the kids of our awesome Memphis Ice Machine Company team members—to find out what makes ice the coolest thing since, well, the beginning of time.

Watch the video below to get the scoop on ice from these cool kids!

What happens when water gets really cold?

First things first, let’s tackle the basics: what happens when water gets really, really cold? According to our ice scientists-in-training, it freezes! Harlow, Matt, and Harry all agree on this one.

What makes ice awesome?

Now, what makes ice so awesome, you ask? According to our kiddos, the possibilities are endless! Harlow suggests slipping and sliding (which sounds like a blast!). Matt gets creative with freezing ice into all sorts of shapes, and Harry knows the real deal—ice keeps your drinks colder than a polar plunge in a frozen lake.

What are some fun activities we can do with ice?

But wait, there’s more! When it comes to fun activities with ice, these kids are bursting with ideas. Harlow dreams of building an igloo with snow and ice. Matt envisions ice glaciers and snow cones galore. And Harry? He’s all about making a splash by tossing it into the pool.

Why does ice float?

Now, let’s get to the science behind the magic—why does ice float instead of sinking like a stone? Harlow, Matt, and Harry all have their theories, from density to weight, but one thing’s for sure—ice knows how to defy gravity!

How does ice keep our drinks cold?

And what about those scorching hot days when you need a frosty refreshment? Fear not, because ice is there to save the day! Whether it’s “super-duper cold” (according to Harlow), cooling down your sweet tea (thanks, Matt!), or just being colder than water itself (Harry’s got your back), ice knows how to keep things cool even when the hot summer sun does not.

Can ice come in different shapes?

But here’s the real question—have you ever noticed how ice comes in all shapes and sizes? From cubes to spheres to crushed goodness, there's ice for every occasion! Harlow digs cubes, Matt’s all about that crushed ice, and Harry? Well, he’s got a taste for crushed ice too!

What would a world without ice be like?

Now, close your eyes and imagine a world without ice. Sounds pretty bleak, doesn’t it? According to our young philosophers, your drinks would be “hot forever” (touché, Harlow!). We can’t imagine anything worse! Snow days and snow cones would be things of the past, and let’s face it—the world would just be a little less cool.
